Girl rising review

The film “Girl Rising” is a documentary that follows nine girls from Haiti, Nepal, Egypt, India, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan. The film tells their stories and their road to education. The story of the girls include child labor, little or no access to education, sexual abuse, poverty, arranged marriage, and so on. The documentary aims to raise awareness around the importance of education for girls in developing countries.

One of the girls featured in the documentary is Amina from Afghanistan. Amina lives under severe oppression and have through her whole life been oppressed by men. Amina made the greatest impression on me, she has been considered, among the rest of the girls in the village, as an “unworthy” through her whole life, just because of her birth as a girl. Amina tells about the extreme conditions and the cruelty that women in her village have to put up with. By telling her story, Amina risks her life, if any man from her village found out; the punishment would be death.

Amina’s story enlightened me and gave me compassion for women living under such cruel circumstances. Amina also shows great courage by telling her story, a courage bigger than any man from her village possesses. Amina’s story made me think more about the importance of helping women that lives under severe oppression. Oppression of women is a world problem that we should prioritize solving.

A catchphrase from the film is “One girl with courage is a revolution” the phrase can imply that because of men’s oppression of women, you will rarely find a girl with courage to speak up for women. The phrase also indicates that new thinking, among oppressed women, is a revolution.

The documentary tells stories that would only be non-effective on men that suppress women and the most cold hearted. When watching the film I found the stories interesting but mostly effective. The stories made a great impression on me and enlightened me on the importance of the problem of suppressed women. The documentary connects with the hearts of the spectators by telling the nine girl’s stories that compel to compassion and awareness.

The nine girls do not consider themselves as victims; I think it is hard for a person from one of the world’s wealthiest countries Norway, to emphasize to these girls lives, because we live in a great country under terrific circumstances. It is almost impossible for me personally, to imagine how it is to live these girls lives, I’ have never been near the experiences that these girls have had. I would also say that it is almost impossible to imagine the amount of courage; that some of these girls have built up, to be brave enough to tell their stories.

The film tells heartbreaking and inspiring stories, I think people who are not familiar with the issue of women suppressing and the importance of education for women in developing countries, will be enlightened. The film illuminates the plight of girls in the developing world and shows aspects from their lives. I think the ignorant will resonate on the importance of this world problem, and have a deeper understanding and insight after watching the film. Like myself, I think most people will think, this is an issue the world must highly prioritize.
